Does it Snow in the Netherlands?
Yes, it does snow in the Netherlands.
During the winter months, temperatures can drop below freezing, creating the perfect conditions for white fluffy snow.
Like its German neighbor, the northern parts of the Netherlands get the most snow. This is especially true from December to February.
But thanks to our ever-changing climate, the amount of snowfall in the Netherlands can vary significantly from year to year.
Some winters bring heavy snowstorms, while others leave you wondering if it’s winter at all.
If you’re lucky enough to see snow in the Netherlands, expect windmills with snowy hats, tulips covered in snowflakes, and canals transformed into ice-skating wonderlands.
The Climate in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has a temperate maritime climate, thanks to its proximity to the North Sea.

🌞Mild Summers
Summers in the Netherlands are generally mild with temperatures ranging from 17°C to 20°C (63°F to 68°F). Occasional heatwaves can occur, pushing temperatures above 30°C (86°F).
This is definitely the best time to visit Amsterdam!
❄️Cool Winters
Cool Winters: Winters are cool with temperatures ranging from 2°C to 6°C (36°F to 43°F). Frost, below-freezing temperatures, and snowfall are common, especially in eastern and northern Holland.
☔Rainfall Year Round
The Netherlands experiences rainfall throughout the year. The wettest months are August and October, while February and April are the driest.
☁️Cloudy & Variable
The Netherlands is known for its variable weather where it can be sunny one minute and rainy the next. Quick weather changes are common, so be prepared for varying conditions.
When Does it Snow in the Netherlands?

The winter months of December to February are the most common months for snowfall in the Netherlands.
On average, the coldest months are January and February, as temperatures can drop below freezing.
Snowfall in December

As the first official month of winter, don’t be surprised to see snow in the Netherlands in December.
It is more common to see a lot of rain, though, approximately 73mm to 83mm.
December temperatures range from 0°C to 9°C (32°F to 48°F). That, coupled with an increase in humidity and intense winds, means it can get very chilly!
So, if you’re planning a 2–week itinerary of the Netherlands for Christmas, make sure to pack warm winter clothing that will keep you toasty warm and dress in layers.
I recommend a scarf, hat, gloves, and even water-resistant shoes. (No one likes wet feet).
Snowfall in January

The coldest month in the Netherlands is January when temperatures dip from 0°C to 4°C (32°F to 39°F). Not to mention the limited sunshine, cloudy skies, and a lot of chilly wind.
Expect a lot of rain and snow, especially inland. And don’t be surprised to see more snow on the ground, up to a few centimeters in some regions.
The colder temperatures help keep the snow around longer too, especially in rural areas. Be mindful when driving on rural roads.
Snowfall in February

February sees slightly milder temperatures than January, with fewer freezing days and a tad more sunshine.
Weather conditions can still be a mix of rain, sleet, and snow. Snowfall can still occur, but it is less frequent and does not stick around as long.
I still recommend packing for winter weather, as the sunshine is limited, and the winds are chilly.

Where Does it Snow in the Netherlands?

Snowfall in the Netherlands differs depending on what region you’re visiting.
Typically, the eastern provinces of Gelderland, Overijssel, and Drenthe, northern provinces of Groningen, Friesland, and Drenthe, and inland provinces of Veluwe and Limburg, tend to receive more snow due to their location and elevation.
But let’s check out the popular destinations of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht.
Snow in Amsterdam
Although it does snow in Amsterdam, don’t expect to be making snowmen on your 4 day itinerary.
The best you can hope for is a light snowy dusting, as the city only sees around 11 days of snowfall per year. Rain and sleet are much more common.
Don’t worry, you can watch the canals from your fantastic accessible hotel!
Expect December to be cold, as temperatures hover around 5°C (41°F). The wind can make it feel much colder, too.

| 10.3 | 10.2 | 6.3 | 2.6 | 0.3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.8 | 6.7 | 11.9 |
Snow in Rotterdam
Due to its proximity to the North Sea, Rotterdam has milder winters and less snowfall compared to Amsterdam. That means you can still enjoy a Rotterdam hotel with a balcony in the winter
A mix of precipitation, like rain or sleet, is more common than snow. Thankfully, the snow only remains on the ground for extended periods during a cold snap from Russia.
Although temperatures are around 0°C (32°F), the high winds and humidity and the reduced sunshine make it feel much colder.

| 2.5 | 3.5 | 4.5 | 6.5 | 7 | 7 | 7 | 6.5 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 2 |
Snow in Utrecht
Despite being one of the most beautiful towns in the Netherlands, Utrecht experiences similar winter conditions as the rest of the country.
The city is gripped by bitingly cold temperatures of 1.4°C (35°F), only made worse by the highest wind speeds of the year. This, along with a little sunshine, can make it feel colder than it is.
And since the snowfall in Utrecht is minimal, you may want to consider traveling in winter. Accommodations are usually discounted, so it’s a great way to spend less money on your trip!
