Mediterranean cuisine is inspired by the coastal regions surrounding the sea, like Spain, Italy, Greece, and even Malta in Southern Europe.

But the Mediterranean region also covers North Africa and the Middle East. It’s no wonder the Mediterranean cuisine is incredibly diverse!

What Makes a Diet “Mediterranean”?

Mediterranean cuisine blends fresh, seasonal ingredients and vibrant flavors. It emphasizes plant–based foods and incorporates healthy fats from olive oil and moderate portions of fish and dairy.

Given that Greece sits right in the heart of this region, it’s no surprise that its cuisine embodies everything Mediterranean food stands for.

This way of eating not only reflects a rich Greek culinary history but also promotes overall health and longevity.

Olive Oil — The Liquid Gold of Greece

Greek olive oil is among the best in the world! It is known for its rich flavor and exceptional quality. This staple in Mediterranean cuisine enhances everything from salads to grilled meats.

Fresh Vegetables & Herbs

Tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, eggplant, and peppers thrive in Greece’s sunny climate and appear in countless dishes. Herbs like oregano, dill, and parsley are essential in Greek cooking, enhancing dishes with their bold, earthy flavors.

Grains, Legumes & Seafood

Ingredients like lentils, chickpeas, barley, and bulgur have been at the core of Greek cooking for centuries. Whether in a comforting bowl of lentil soup or a tabbouleh–style salad, they bring both nutrition and flavor.

Cheese & Yogurt

Feta cheese is a Greek icon, often crumbled over salads or baked into savory pies. Meanwhile, thick, creamy Greek yogurt (not the watered–down version you find at home) is essential for delicious dips like tzatziki.

While many Mediterranean cuisines share ingredients and techniques, Greek food has distinct dishes that stand out above the rest.

Whether it was dining in a local taverna in the village of Stemnitsa, or exploring Sifnos, the “foodie island”, we made sure to sample as many Greek dishes as possible.

Start with these… then let your taste buds guide you!

1. Souvlaki

A Greek street food favorite — perfectly grilled skewers of marinated meat, served with a warm pita, crisp veggies, and tzatziki.

This classic Greek staple is perfect after a day of exploring Athens’ historic landmarks.   

2. Greek Salad (Horiatiki)

Juicy tomatoes, crunchy cucumbers, and red onions, topped with feta, oregano, and a drizzle of olive oil.

I was amazed by how flavorful such a simple dish could be. A splash of balsamic, a dash of salt—it’s perfection.

There’s no need to get yourself to Sifnos, you can order a Greek salad everywhere!

3. Moussaka

A huge slice of Moussaka, a common Greek food that is Mediterranean. There is ground beef on the bottom, with eggplant and topped with creamy bechamel sauce and fresh cheese sprinkled on top, all sitting on a white plate.

This classic dish is layered of eggplant, spiced meat sauce, and creamy béchamel baked until golden brown and irresistibly delicious.

It’s the Greek cousin to Italian lasagna… hearty, flavorful, and my absolute favorite on any Greek menu! We had the best Moussaka on our 2 week Peloponnese road trip.

4. Tzatziki

Tzatziki is a Greek Mediterranean dish you want with every meal. It is served in a small white dish here sprinkled with green herb. The dish sits inside a break basket with 4 pieces of bread around it.

A refreshing yogurt–based dip made with garlic, cucumber, and dill, tzatziki is the perfect complement to grilled meats and warm pita.

It’s creamy, tangy, and a non-negotiable at any Greek meal… it makes everything taste better!

5. Spanakopita

Two pieces of Spanakopita, a classic Greek appetizer with Mediterranean roots. Made of phyllo dough, it is stuffed with cheese and spinach, then baked crispy.

A flaky, savory pastry is filled with spinach, feta, onions, and herbs, all wrapped up in layers of golden filo dough.

This traditional Mediterranean food is a popular take away option from restaurants, bakeries and even the cafes near the best Kalamata beaches.

6. Greek Lemon Potatoes

Roasted with olive oil, garlic, lemon, and oregano, Greek–style potatoes are crispy yet soft, and full of Mediterranean zest. They pair perfectly with grilled meats and seafood.

We had the best lemony potatoes with slow–roasted lamb at one of our favorite restaurants in Sifnos.

7. Stuffed Grape Leaves

Dolmades are grape leaves wrapped around a savory filling of rice, herbs, and ground meat.

Served warm or cold, they’re a staple mezze dish across the Mediterranean.

We tried this dish on Milos and loved the blend of lemony tang and aromatic spices.

8. Gyros

Is Greek food Mediterranean, well this plate of Gyros is! Marinated chicken shaved onto pita bread served with fries and salad. There is another Greek salad at the back right.

Like souvlaki but served differently, gyros are made from spiced, slow–roasted meat (often pork or chicken) sliced thin and wrapped in a warm pita with tomatoes, onions, fries, and tzatziki.

Nothing beats grabbing a fresh gyro while strolling the beaches on Sifnos!

9. Stuffed Vegetables

A bright red pepper cut in half stuffed with delicious cheese and garnished with fresh cilantro. This Greek Mediterranean food is a must on any trip!

Gemista are tomatoes, bell peppers, or zucchini stuffed with a fragrant mixture of rice, herbs, and sometimes minced meat, then baked until tender.

This classic Greek dish is all about the Mediterranean’s love for fresh produce.

10. Saganaki

Saganaki is a Greek dish of cheese pan fried until golden brown. It is served with a lemon wedge and tomato on a white plate.

This crispy, golden pan–fried cheese dish, made with either Kefalotyri or Graviera, is served sizzling hot with a squeeze of lemon.

Salty, melty goodness inside a crunchy crust. Don’t leave Greece without trying this!

11. Baklava

A huge slice of Baklava, a traditional Greek and Mediterranean dessert of crispy phyllo dough, pistachios, walnuts and honey.

A rich, flaky dessert made with layers of phyllo dough, chopped nuts, and honey syrup, baklava is a sweet treat across the Mediterranean and Middle East.

The Greeks tend to use walnuts and a generous drizzle of honey. I think we indulged in this irresistibly crunchy sweetness everyday on our trip.

Both cuisines emphasize olive oil, bread, and cheese prominently, like feta in Greece and mozzarella or parmesan in Italy. While Italians love pasta, Greeks favor filo pastries and grilled meats.
